Your gifts make a difference in the lives of Deaconess patients. Thank you for giving.
Safe Babies: Secure at Home and On the Go is a Deaconess Foundation initiative to address the car seat and safe sleep needs in the DHS service area.
The Safe Babies
program is dedicated to the wellbeing and safety of DHS’s smallest patients. Through Safe Babies
, families are provided Safe Sleep kits, including portable cribs and/or an infant car seat to ensure baby is safe at home and on the go. By providing these resources, our goal is to prevent childhood injuries and contribute to the overall reduction of infant mortality in the Evansville region and beyond. Families are referred by a Deaconess clinician to Deaconess case management staff who will work with them to assess their needs. Resources will be provided to families identified through this screening process. DHS employees will track the number of families being supported and resources being distributed.
There are two specific identified needs being supported through this program:
- DHS employees report identifying 8-10 patients a month in need of a car seat for their infant before leaving the hospital after delivery. Indiana law requires that children under the age of 12 months and 20 pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing car seat.
- A recent increase in infant mortality in the DHS service area due to unsafe sleep practices has been identified. According to Indiana Department of Health’s report on infant mortality & birth outcomes, 20.1% of infant deaths in 2020 were related to unsafe sleeping practices. Providing Pack ‘n Plays® to families in need will help reduce deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and unsafe sleep.
