Garden of Peace

Dr. John Berry was a founding member of The Women’s Hospital and an OB/GYN physician who built relationships with families in the Tri-State for years. At the end of his practice, Dr. Berry had delivered more than 6,500 babies.

Perhaps more significant than the joy he shared as families welcomed a new life into the world was the comfort, support and compassion he showed to families who experienced a neonatal or newborn death.

After his passing in 2005, Dr. Berry’s wife Kathy looked for a way to honor and remember the man who had played such an integral role in the community. Through an arrangement with Deaconess and The Women’s Hospital, Kathy orchestrated creation of the John K. Berry, M.D. Garden of Peace.
The space, located to the right of The Women’s Hospital front entrance, provides solitude and reflection for patients and visitors. Due to its location and Dr. Berry’s compassion for families who lost a baby, the Garden of Peace also serves as a safe and comforting environment for bereaved parents.
The Deaconess Foundation offers families the opportunity to remember these tiny angels and other loved ones by personalizing a brick that is incorporated into the Garden of Peace.

Garden bricks can be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one.
