Scott Cordts, MD - Program Director
A native of West Frankfort, Illinois, Dr. Cordts graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2002 and then completed his Family Medicine residency training at Deaconess Hospital in 2005. He subsequently became a board certified family physician.
For 4 years he practiced rural family medicine in Sparta and Marissa, Illinois, as an employee of Sparta Community Hospital. While there, he served as a preceptor for family medicine residents at the Saint Louis University Family Medicine Residency.
In July 2009, Dr. Cordts relocated with his family to Evansville to join the faculty at the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency Program. He served as Associate Director since 2013 and was promoted to Program Director in July of 2018. His special interests include quality improvement, curriculum development, evidence-based medicine, preventive care, office procedures and colonoscopy.
Charles Strickland, MD - Associate Program Director
A native of Louisville, KY, Dr Strickland graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1992, during which time he served in the USAF Reserves. He completed post-graduate training in 1995 at a dual Family Medicine residency via the United States Air Force at the University of Nebraska and Erhling Bergquist Hospital at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska.
After 7 years of active duty military service, he relocated his family to Evansville and began a private practice in Newburgh, Indiana. He also began precepting at the St Mary’s Family Medicine Residency Program. In 2000, he accepted the position of Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency at St. Mary’s and retained that position until its closure in 2007.
He continued private practice at St Mary’s until 2008, at which time he accepted a position at the Veterans Administration. From 2008 to 2015, Dr Strickland served as a primary care physician for many of our country’s local veterans.
In October 2015, he accepted a faculty position with the Family Medicine Residency Program at Deaconess. He also serves as Site Director for the Indiana University School of Medicine Junior Clerkship program at Deaconess. His special interests are adult medicine, the under-served, and the art of medicine.
Jared Hutson, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Jared Hutson joined the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency in November of 2021. He is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and a native of Guilford, Indiana. He completed residency at Deaconess in 2020. Prior to joining the residency faculty, he worked for Deaconess Clinic at the Boonville location.
His current interests include inpatient medicine, addiction medicine and nonsurgical obstetrics.
Nathan Oakley, MD - Assistant Director
A native of New Harmony, IN and the greater Evansville area, Dr. Oakley graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2013. He completed family medicine residency training at Fort Wayne Medical Education Program in 2016.
Dr. Oakley joined the faculty for the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency Program in August of 2016. This opportunity allowed him to return to southwestern Indiana and stay invested in the community in which he grew up. He is passionate about teaching, preventative care, and evidence-based medicine.
Hannah Simpson, DO - Assistant Director
Dr. Simpson grew up in Knoxville, TN and stayed in Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee where she completed her undergraduate degree in biochemistry, cellular, and molecular biology. She then attended medical school at VCOM-Carolinas in Spartanburg, SC before moving to the Midwest to complete her residency training. She completed the family medicine residency at Deaconess prior to joining as faculty in 2025.
Her professional areas of interest include teaching, women's health, prenatal care, and preventative medicine. Outside of medicine, she enjoys backpacking, traveling, reading, playing with her dogs, and watching Tennessee football.
Jared Cerny, MD - Assistant Director
Dr. Jared Cerny was raised in southern Illinois and attended Saint Louis University for undergraduate biology studies. Following this, he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale before attending medical school at the University of Illinois in Rockford. He completed residency in Family Medicine at Deaconess Hospital system in 2025 after which he joined the faculty team, with whom he is excited to continue serving the Evansville community and surrounding regions.
Professional areas of interest include hospital-based medicine, outpatient clinic, performing colonoscopy/EGD services and medical education. Outside of medicine Dr. Cerny enjoys being outdoors, backpacking, soccer, basketball, boardgames and spending time with his family/friends.
Jennifer Bouwkamp, PhD, HSPP - Behavioral Health Director
Dr. Bouwkamp is a licensed clinical psychologist. She completed her doctoral degree in counseling psychology at Indiana University with an elective minor in public health. Her dissertation focused on the relationship between work values and job satisfaction among family physicians and was subsequently published in a national, peer-reviewed journal.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Kansas. Her pre-doctoral internship was through the Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Consortium and consisted of clinical rotations at Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital and Rusk Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Bouwkamp’s post-doctoral residency was completed at Fulton State Hospital, a forensic psychiatric facility, in Fulton, Missouri. She has also worked in a variety of other settings, including community mental health centers and long-term nursing care facilities, and has experience as an instructor at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She joined the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency faculty in June of 2017.
Lori Munsie, DO - Women’s Health Director
Dr. Lori Munsie grew up in Northern Kentucky. She worked as an ICU Nurse for several years until deciding to further her education in medicine. She graduated from Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002 and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Deaconess in 2007. Her special interest in women's health led her to complete a FM OB/GYN fellowship at UTMB-Austin Brackenridge Hospital in 2008. After working as Family Physician for several years, her interest in OB/GYN continued and she then completed an OB/GYN residency at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, CA in 2016.
The past 8 years she has worked in a hospital practice as an OB/GYN and as a locum's hospitalist physician. Over the years, Dr. Munsie has always had interest in teaching including nursing students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, and resident physicians. Her other special interests include teen pregnancy, PCOS, menopause, hormone replacement therapy, medical missions, and many others. Outside of medicine Dr. Munsie enjoys spending time with family and friends, quilting, country music, and watching her favorite sports teams the Wildcats, Reds, and the Bengals.
Sheryl Ezell - Program Coordinator
I was a long-time resident of Evansville and originally a “Westsider”, I was born at Deaconess as were my children and grandchildren. I love this area and the growth that continues around our community not only in Indiana but also in Kentucky and Illinois.
I have worked in HealthCare for over 20 years, and I previously worked for Deaconess supporting the Physician Medical Group and later joined the IT Help Desk as a technician. I recently returned to Deaconess after 14 years of working in medical education roles and I have come to appreciate the Deaconess culture and the family friendly environment. I’m hoping to use my experience in GME to support the Deaconess Family Practice Residency. Graduate Medical Education is a unique and challenging environment, but very rewarding. I appreciate more than ever watching the first-year residents grow in their knowledge, skills, and self-confidence and finally, after they graduate, they dedicate themselves to caring for others and a lifetime of learning. The faculty in our Deaconess program are also passionately dedicated to resident success and I’m honored to help support the program.
Away from the office, my husband and I enjoy camping, Friday night football games, theme parks, an occasional Disney trip and big holidays under one roof. I love to bake, and art of any kind are my favorite types of stress relief. Now living in Henderson, KY we also cheer for the UK Wildcats and enjoy experiencing the many unique music festivals, local restaurants, and family carnivals that Henderson has to offer.
James R. Porter, MD, FAAP, FACHE - Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, DIO
Dr. Porter joined Deaconess Hospital in 2000 as an adult and pediatric hospitalist. He became vice president of Medical Affairs in 2002 and held several leadership positions before being named executive vice president and chief physician executive for Deaconess Health System in 2014. That position evolved in 2015 and included serving as chairperson of OneCare, Deaconess’ clinically integrated network. Today, he holds the role of president.
Dr. Porter additionally serves on the boards of The Women’s Hospital, Encompass Health Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital, Deaconess Clinic, Deaconess Care Integration Next Generation CMS ACO, Ferrell Hospital, Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, The Health Care Group (Encore) and SIHO Insurance Services. He is also chairperson of the Innovative Health Care Collaborative of Indiana (IHCI) board.
James received his BA in microbiology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and his MD from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky and achieved board certification in both specialties. Dr. Porter is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Porter is actively involved in the community, serving on numerous boards including the IU School of Medicine Evansville Community Advisory Committee, Southern Indiana Graduate Education Consortium (SIGMEC), Southwestern Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana, Warrick County Chamber of Commerce, and Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trace Council. He dedicated significant time and effort to the United Way of Southwest Indiana serving as 2019 United Way Campaign chair and board chairperson.
