    History

Deaconess Foundation became the official fundraising arm of the health system in 1972. It adopted a mission to support the medical, charitable and educational activities of Deaconess by raising and distributing funds.

Members of the volunteer Auxiliary played an instrumental role in the early and continued success of the Foundation. Auxiliary members donated proceeds from hospital gift shop sales and other fundraisers help support initiatives in the health system.

Notable projects during the 1970's included purchasing an $87,000 heart x-ray machine and contributing more than $200,000 to support construction of the Health Sciences Building and Tri-State Cancer Care Center as well as improvements to the Mt. Vernon Medical Center. In 1979, the Heritage of Leadership campaign began with a three-year goal of raising $1.5 million. By the end of 1981, donations exceeded $1.6 million. These funds, along with money raised throughout the 1980's Party of the Year events, helped build a new Emergency and Trauma Center and the Deaconess Child Care Center.

Efforts to support the medical, charitable and educational activities of Deaconess Health System continued into the 21st century. The purchase of simulation manikins for emergency, pediatric, and obstetrical training, mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women, creation of Deaconess Cancer Services, and construction of the Linda E. White Hospice House represent some of the biggest projects undertaken by the Foundation in the past decade.
