For many people who are obese, surgery is the most effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. Our team will work with you to determine if surgery is the best route for you.
Surgical options include:
- Gastric Bypass Surgery: a highly effective, long-term treatment for morbid obesity. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy (also called gastric sleeve surgery): a laparoscopic procedure where a thin, vertical sleeve of the stomach is created using a stapling device. The sleeve is about the size of a banana, and it limits the amount of food you can eat. The rest of the stomach is removed.
Either surgery you choose is part of a larger weight loss program that includes:
- Monthly clinic visits
- Nutritional counseling
- Psychological evaluation
- Exercise and fitness instruction
- Postoperative follow up
- Support groups and education
Are you a good candidate for bariatric surgery? It might be a good choice for you if these statements are true:
- You are morbidly obese. This means you have a BMI, or Body Mass Index, of at least 40, or a BMI of at least 35 plus an obesity-related disease such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
- You have tried to lose weight using other methods and they have not worked.
- You are committed to making the changes necessary for long-term success. Surgery is only the beginning of the weight loss journey. To lose weight and keep it off – which most bariatric surgery patients are able to do – you will have to commit to making healthy choices.
