Orthopaedic Associates and Deaconess Break Ground on New Outpatient Surgery Center
Located in Newburgh on Deaconess’ Gateway Campus, the OA Surgery Center will feature five advanced operating rooms operated as part of Deaconess Gateway Hospital and dedicated exclusively to orthopedic procedures, along with pre-operative and post-operative recovery areas tailored for orthopedic patients. The second floor will house Deaconess Therapy services as well as OA’s pre-surgery optimization clinic, with additional space for future growth.
“The groundbreaking of the new surgery center, in collaboration with Deaconess, marks a meaningful step forward in how we deliver orthopaedic care,” Orthopaedic Associates CEO Jerry Blanton said. “Healthcare is evolving. More procedures are moving to the outpatient setting, offering high-quality care at a lower cost and with a better overall experience for patients. This center reflects that shift. It’s an advancement that not only benefits -- most importantly -- the patients but also physicians and the broader health system.”
Orthopedic surgeries continue to move toward outpatient settings, including sports medicine procedures, hip, knee and shoulder replacements, as well as hand, foot, ankle, carpal tunnel and pain management interventions. By concentrating exclusively on these services, the OA Surgery Center will create an outpatient environment highly specialized for orthopedic patients and their families. The center will also be equipped with the latest robotic and surgical technologies, enhanced OR monitoring systems and fully integrated Epic electronic medical records.
“This project represents more than bricks and mortar—it’s about strengthening our collaboration with Orthopaedic Associates and building a patient-focused experience that delivers exceptional care right here in our community,” said Dr. Brad Scheu, Deaconess Central Region President. “With more operating rooms and a facility designed specifically for orthopedic needs, we’ll be able to improve access, reduce wait times and help more patients receive the advanced care they need, close to home. This patient-centered approach is at the core of everything we’re doing.”
By focusing exclusively on orthopedic patients, the center will deliver a surgical experience that not only shortens recovery times but also prioritizes access and a deeply patient-centered approach. It also positions both organizations for continued growth, supporting the growth of orthopedic specialty services to the area and reinforcing OA and Deaconess’ mission to provide high-quality, compassionate care close to home.
Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2026, with the center welcoming patients shortly thereafter.
