Jessica Basham BSN RN of Deaconess Henderson Hospital awarded July 2024 DAISY Award
"I was admitted to the hospital with a collapsed lung 3 days after my daughter passed away. I didn’t get to make it to her funeral because I was very sick with a chest tube. I was absolutely crushed. This nurse, talked with me, hugged me, and let me tell her all about my amazing daughter. She stayed on top of my pain and anxiety meds and checked on me and my family every chance she got. I can’t imagine a pain worse than what I’m going through, and I couldn’t have gotten thorough it without this nurse. Her bedside manner was amazing. She really did it all; she was a nurse, a friend, and a support system for me during this time. If I had questions or concerns, she addressed them right away and put my mind at ease, while my heart was broken. She came in every morning with a smile on her face, and checked in with me before she left each shift. Jessica Basham was truly wonderful to me, and I am so grateful. I’ll never forget her kindness through the darkest part of my life."
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care that nurses provide everyday. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way. This year, they are celebrating their 26th birthday. Deaconess is proud to be a DAISY Award partner, recognizing two DAISY Award winners each year: one in July and one in December.
