Elevating the Patient Experience: More than a Pillowcase

At first glance, you see a smiling little boy. What you don't see are the countless appointments, procedures and challenges Joey has faced along the way. Through it all, he has remained remarkably resilient — meeting each obstacle with a smile and holding onto hope for brighter days ahead.

For kids like him, a hospital visit can feel overwhelming. Unfamiliar rooms, medical equipment and procedures can be scary and difficult to process.

The staff at Deaconess' Pediatric GI understand that caring for children means caring for more than just medical needs. Sometimes, comfort can come from something as simple as having an item to call their own.

Because of an ongoing grant that is awarded on an annual basis, every child receiving treatment in the Pediatric GI unit receives a colorful pillowcase to take home after their visit. Each pillowcase is exciting and bright, giving them something fun and personal during a day that may otherwise feel stressful.

What may seem like a small gift often becomes much more. Each pillowcase goes home with our pediatric patients, serving as a comforting reminder of the care and kindness they experienced during their treatment.

While medical expertise remains at the heart of every patient visit, moments of comfort elevate the level of care Deaconess is able to provide. This project reflects the impact of donor generosity by transforming a clinical experience into one that feels a little warmer, a little brighter, and a little less scary for the children and families we serve.
