Aortic Stenosis
A narrowing of a heart valve, causing symptoms that can start gradually and get worse over time. Common symptoms include shortness of breath and inability to be active. Treatment includes aortic valve replacement surgery or
TAVR (transcutaneous aortic valve replacement).
Aortic Valve Regurgitation Treatment
When the aortic valve does not properly close, it leaks blood back into the ventricle, causing symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath and sometimes chest pain. The condition can be caused by high blood pressure, rheumatic disease, or due to an infection of the heart valve, and symptoms may get worse gradually over time. Treatment is often surgical aortic valve replacement or
TAVR.
Heart Bypass
Heart bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is the most widely-used type of surgery to treat coronary artery disease. If a heart artery becomes blocked, the surgeon can use a vein from another site of the body to bypass blood flow around the blockage.
Mitral Valve Disease
Mitral valve prolapse, mitral stenosis, and mitral regurgitation can all be classified as mitral valve disease. In this condition, the mitral valve is not functioning properly and may need repaired or replaced depending on the severity of the disease.
Ventricular Assist Device
Patients whose hearts may have been weakened by heart disease or heart failure may be a candidate for a ventricular assist device. This is a mechanical heart pump outside the body (short-term) or inside the heart (long-term) for patients who may need a heart transplant. Currently, the type of VAD placed at The Heart Hospital is a short term solution; meaning that once the patient is stabilized, they will be transferred to a facility that performs heart transplant or for long-term ventricular assist device placement.
