Structural Heart

Deaconess Heart Group provides the most comprehensive options of cardiovascular services in the area.  Our Structural Heart programs help patients treat their conditions. Structural heart disease affects heart valves and vessels. Some structural heart conditions are congenital, and others develop as you age.

Deaconess Heart Group team of cardiologists, electrophysiologists and cardiovascular surgeons have been specially trained for treatment of advanced and complex structural heart disease. Deaconess Heart Group providers are the only ones in the Tri-State performing certain structural procedures such as TAVR and LAAC (Left Atrial Appendage Closure).

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).  The TAVR procedure is performed on patients that have diagnosed severe Aortic Stenosis (AS). TAVR is an alternative treatment for AS for those patients who have been evaluated and found to be at intermediate or greater risk for open surgical valve replacement. TAVR is a less invasive, catheter-based technique for replacing a patient’s diseased aortic valve.  An interventional cardiologist along with a cardiothoracic surgeon work together in the TAVR procedure.

LAAC (Left Atrial Appendage Closure) is a onetime implantable device that reduces the risk of stroke and the long term risk of bleeding in patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation. The LAAC implant acts as a barrier to keep blood clots from leaving the left atrial appendage and going into the blood stream. Once the barrier has been placed you will have to continue anticoagulation for a short period of time until your heart tissue starts growing over the barrier.
