This 1/2 day refresher course prepares physicians to deal with trauma, the leading cause of death in the US for those 40 and younger. The course covers initial assessment and management of severe injuries. Specific knowledge of treatment principles for various injury types can significantly reduce the morbity and mortality of trauma.

This course is composed of lectures and audiovisual presentations followed by hands-on practical station rotations. Testing includes written examinations and observed performance at these practical skill stations.

The material and presentations in this course conforms to national standards established by the American College of Surgeons. As an organization accredited for continuing medical education by the Accreditation Council Continuing Medical Education, the American College of Surgeons designates this continuing medical activity as meeting the criteria for 5 credit hours in Category I. Also approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for 5 hours of ACEP Category I credit.

Course Objectives: The ATLS course prepares participants to:
  • Demonstrate concepts and principles of patient assessment
  • Establish management priorities in a trauma
  • Initiate primary and secondary management necessary for life-threatening emergencies within the first hour of trauma
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary in initial management of trauma victims
