A lower GI series, also known as a barium enema, uses x-rays to diagnose problems in the colon and rectum. A lower GI may show abnormal growths, ulcers, polyps or other problems. During Your Lower GI You may be asked to roll from side to side and to occasionally hold your breath. After a series of x-rays have been completed, you will be allowed to go to the bathroom and expel the barium. A lower GI series takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. After Your Exam
