Intensive Care for Cardiac Surgical Patients

IVThe Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CVSICU) is a 10-bed area reserved for cardiac and thoracic surgical patients requiring the highest level of monitoring and treatment. Each patient stays in a self-contained room that is fully equipped to meet medical needs. Supportive equipment, such as ventilators, intra-aortic balloon pumps and other vascular assist devices, are common tools used to manage care.

The expertise of the CVSICU nursing staff allows us to provide an exceptionally high level of care. Approximately 70% of our nurses have specialized in cardiac intensive care for over 15 years. Additionally, most are trauma certified (TNCC), many are certified in critical care (CCRN), and all are certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

Years of experience and advanced training allow our nurses to communicate most effectively with patient families and the physicians directing each patient’s care. We find that their skills contribute greatly to successful medical outcomes as well as patient and family satisfaction.

Inpatient Dialysis Treatment
This area also houses the inpatient dialysis unit. Dialysis patients from all hospital units, except other intensive care units, are transported to CVSICU for treatment.  Three treatment bays are available to accommodate simultaneous dialysis procedures.

In addition to traditional dialysis treatment, we offer continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), a milder form of dialysis.  This procedure is often used to treat fluid shifts that occur after surgery. In these situations, CRRT can prevent kidney failure and the need for full dialysis.
