Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic

WHAT IS MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE

Hearing that you have breast cancer can be both stressful and overwhelming. The term “multidisciplinary” is used frequently today in describing the ideal care for breast cancer. This requires a multi-physician approach to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

The Women's Hospital, Deaconess, Evansville Surgical Associates and Vantage Oncology have worked collaboratively to provide a Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic, located in Chancellor Center on the on the Deaconess Gateway Medical Campus.

OUR TEAM APPROACH

A multidisciplinary team for breast cancer consists of a breast surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist. Each situation is different so when necessary, plastic surgeons, genetic counselors, or other healthcare providers are also included as part of the team. To see these providers in separate appointments could take several weeks of coordination.

The Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic is designed to evaluate patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer in a comprehensive, single-appointment setting to minimize the time between diagnosis and treatment. On the day of your appointment, you will meet one-on-one with a breast surgeon, medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist who will discuss an appropriate course of treatment for you and answer your questions with regard to your new diagnosis. Additionally, other medical professionals, such as a genetic counselor or dietitian, may also meet with you depending on your unique situation. All of our team members are committed to providing you and your caregivers the highest quality of care and attention during your appointment.

A referral to the Clinic is required, however if you or a loved one have been diagnosed with breast cancer, ask your physician about the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Patients can expect their appointment to last anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours. You and your family members/caregivers are encouraged to be prepared with questions as you will be meeting with each specialist individually. The next step in the treatment plan will also be scheduled, whether that is surgery or a treatment appointment. A Nurse Navigator will be with you to guide you through this journey. Our staff will also take care of any necessary insurance pre-certifications for you.
