Offering Your Patients Independence and Productivity

HealthSouth Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital offers the NESS H200™, a breakthrough in functional electronic stimulation (FES) technology.

This tool can dramatically assist patients with neurological disorders affecting the function of the arm and hand. The NESS H200 is a custom-fit wrist-hand orthosis that utilizes surface electrodes to sequentially activate muscles of the upper limb to produce functional movement patterns of the hand.

The H200 can be used both as a neuroprosthesis (i.e., as a functional aid for performing activities of daily living) and as a therapeutic device.

Once the H200 is custom fit to the patient, the neuroprosthesis may be used for two primary purposes: computerized hand activation and neurologic facilitation. With regard to hand-activated patterns, individuals with motor deficits may use the neuroprosthesis in grasp and release modes to perform activities of daily living, such as dressing, eating, transferring and cleaning. In this way, patients who utilize the H200 essentially "regain use" to varying degrees of their otherwise paralyzed, nonfunctional upper limb. Equally important, those beneficiaries with some residual function in the hand and arm may use the neuroprosthesis for motor recovery and rehabilitation. Exercise and training protocols that involve increased use of the neuroprosthesis over time enable "motor re-education."

The H200 offers design advantages that yield functionality and versatility for patients and therapists. The H200 orthosis incorporates a self-adjusting fit to hold the wrist and hand in a functional position. This superior fit, coupled with an array of electrodes custom fitted in the orthosis, ensure reproducible placement each time the system is used. In addition to superior fit, the patented microprocessor yields six different stimulation patterns for functional and therapeutic activities. The system is also extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of settings-including the home, with no technical expertise needed.

Who Is a Candidate?

NESS H200 from Bioness is a therapeutic option for patients suffering from a variety of conditions. Patients who have received benefits include those with impairment of limb function due to:

  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Cerebral Palsy (CP)

There are a number of variables in determining candidacy for this therapy program. A trained therapist from HealthSouth Deaconess will evaluate several things, including your patient's current level of function in the affected area.
