Pharmacy Residency Program

The Deaconess Health System Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency is a hospital-based one-year residency program with two positions for Pharmacy postgraduates. Upon completion of the Deaconess Health System Pharmacy Residency, the Residents will function as skilled, caring and ethical practitioners in various settings.

They will be prepared to educate patients, health care professionals and students and will mature professionally by continually monitoring and improving their performance. The Residents will also demonstrate professional leadership and possess strong communication skills that will lead to success in future endeavors.   

ASHP Accreditation 

As of July 2006, the Deaconess Health System PGY1 Pharmacy Residency received accreditation from American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Our program was honored to be granted the maximum accreditation of 6 years by ASHP. Graduates of our program will be prepared to:

  • Manage and improve the medication-use process
  • Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams
  • Exercise leadership and practice management skills
  • Demonstrate project management skills
  • Provide medication and practice-related education/training
  • Utilize medical informatics
     

Meet Our Residency Team

Our Residency Team consists of both pharmacists and technicians. The entire department works as a team to ensure an optimal outcome in all aspects of our daily practice. Each rotation has a primary preceptor, but we work as a team to ensure all learning objectives are met.

Brian Spencer, PharmD – Brian received his Doctor of deaconess pharmacy residencyPharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 2012. He is a native and current resident of western Kentucky, along with his wife and two children.   His primary areas of interest are infectious disease and critical care.  After completion of his residency, Brian plans to work as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital and pursue credentialing in infectious disease and pharmacotherapy.

Residency Project:  Expanding Pharmacists Role in Inpatient Services
Katie (Balko) Theising, PharmD - Katie is originally from Greenfield, IN, deaconess pharmacy residencyand graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in May 2012.  Her interests include ambulatory care, oncology, and drug information.  Upon completion of this residency, Katie plans to take a clinical position in a hospital or outpatient setting with the availability to teach and precept PharmD. candidates.

Residency Project:  Implementation of a medication therapy management (MTM) service as part of an employer-sponsored diabetes management program for health plan beneficiaries

ArthurBrandon.jpgBrandon Arthur, PharmD - Dr. Arthur is a graduate of Washington State University, receiving his Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree in May of 2011. He is originally from Spokane, Washington. His areas of interest include critical care, psychiatrics and pharmacy management. After completing his residency he plans to work in a clinical position ultimately pursuing a career as a consultant pharmacist. After completing his residency, Brandon went to work for Multicare Health System in Tacoma, Washington.

Residency Project: Implementation of an Outpatient-Specialty Pharmacy within a Health System.


 

PucciAngelina.jpgAngelina Pucci, PharmD, BCPS - Angelina is originally from Eureka, MO and graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in May 2011. Her primary focus is general medicine and ambulatory care with additional interest in pediatrics. Angelina remains with Deaconess after completing her PGY1 Residency and focuses in ambulatory care through her involvement in the Pharmacy MTM Clinic and Anticoagulation Clinic.  She is also working as a clinical pharmacist for inpatient services.

ValerieRichardville.jpgValerie (Richardville) Rusch, PharmD –Valerie is
originally from Vincennes, Indiana and graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University in May of 2008.  Upon completing her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, Valerie continues to work at Deaconess as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist and one of the Antimicrobial Stewardship pharmacists. Immediately after completing her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, Valerie remained on staff at Deaconess as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist and one of the Antimicrobial Stewardship pharmacists. She is currently working her hometown in community pharmacy.

BethenyGrabner.jpgBetheny Grabner, PharmD -Betheny is originally from Columbia, IL and graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2010. After her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, she is working to develop the evening clinical program at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, MO.

Residency Project:  Implementation of a Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis Strategy to Reduce Readmission Rates in an Inpatient Community Hospital.

MaherAndrea.jpgAndrea Maher, PharmD - Andrea graduated in May of 2009 with the Doctorate of Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy.  Her areas of interest include infectious disease and oncology. Andrea is currently employed as a Home Infusion Pharmacist at Coram Specialty Infusion Services in St. Louis, MO.

SummersEmily.jpgEmily Summers, PharmD - Emily is originally from Fenton, Missouri.  She attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy, graduating in May, 2009 with her Doctor of Pharmacy.  Her pharmacy interests include pediatrics and oncology.  Emily is currently employed at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, MO.

Residency Project: Developing Clinical Services in an Outpatient Chemotherapy Infusion Center.

AllysonMurray.jpgAllyson Murray, PharmD, BCPS - Ally is a graduate of Butler University, receiving her Doctorate of Pharmacy in May of 2008. She is originally from Evansville, Indiana, and attended Memorial High School. Her areas of interest include critical care and psychiatrics. Ally is currently employed at Deaconess Health System where she practices as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist. She remains involved with the residency by serving at the Cardiology Preceptor.

Residency Project: Evaluation of new insulin infusion protocol in intensive care unit.

 

 

ChristianEslinger.jpgChristian Eslinger, PharmD, BCPS- Christian went to high school in Paris, Illinois. She graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, in May 2008 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and a graduate certificate in Health Services Administration.

AnnaBartok.jpgAnna Bartok, PharmD - Anna is originally from Camarillo, California. She graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska with her PharmD in May of 2007. Anna is currently working with the VA Blackhills Health Center System in Fort Meade, SD. She continues to work with residents at her site as a preceptor and residency project mentor.

Residency Project: Evaluating the feasibility of an outpatient pharmacy located within the health system.

 

 

AndreaTuma.jpgAndrea (Tuma) Zuckerman, PharmD - Andrea is originally from Medford, Wisconsin. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in May 2007. Andrea is currently employed as a pharmacist at Cleveland Clinic and specializes in pediatrics.

Allison.jpgAlison (Dougan) Walton, PharmD BCPS - Alison is originally from Newburgh, Indiana. She completed the Doctor of Pharmacy Program in 2006 at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Her residency experiences helped her achieve her career goal of becoming a clinical specialist. Alison completed a PGY2 Family Medicine Specialty Residency with Clarian Health and Butler University. She is currently in a co-funded position as assistant professor of pharmacy practice with Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and practices as a primary care clinical pharmacist with St. Vincent Primary Care Center.

Jennifer.jpgJennifer Arnoldi, PharmD - Jennifer graduated from Midwestern University-Chicago College of Pharmacy in 2006 with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Her hometown is Decatur, Illinois. Jen’s residency project was developing and implementing a DVT prophylaxis plan at the institution. Upon completing her residency, Jennifer returned closer to her hometown. She is currently employed as a clinical pharmacist at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. In September 2009, Jen began work as an internal medicine faculty position with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Residency Project:   Evaluation Of Risk Factor Assessment And Thromboprophylaxis For Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) In An Inpatient Setting.
