Top 10 Reasons to Choose Deaconess Family Medicine Residency

The top 10 reasons to choose Deaconess Family Medicine Residency are:

1.  Fully accredited, unopposed community program
The Deaconess Family Medicine program has been around since 1975. The family medicine residency is the only residency at Deaconess, which means that the residents are able to do more procedures and work one on one with their preceptors without having to share procedures or time with other residents

2.  Attendings treat residents as peers
The faculty and administration are very supportive of the residents. The hospital has a welcome party for all of the residents and hospital staff. The President and CEO of Deaconess Health Systems, Linda White, regularly attends resident events including graduation, the welcome party, and other special events. She knows the residents by name. The faculty advisors have regular get-togethers with the residents.

3.  Residents have their own workspace
The residents have their own office and each resident has their own cubicle with their own computer. The resident office is a place where residents relax, while also completing charts and other work.

4.  Generous benefits
Deaconess offers many great benefits including a free iPad, an $11,000 moving bonus in the form of a forgivable loan, 3 free meals while on-duty, cell phone discounts, free use of the fitness center, tickets to events including the Evansville Icemen and Party of the Year (hospital’s largest fundraising gala), special events for residents, and daycare.  Generous CME benefits are also available.

5.  Family Medicine Introduction Month
The Family Medicine Introduction month is a great perk for PGY1 residents. During this month, the PGY1 residents are eased into the transition from medical student to resident. They take PALS, ALSO, ACLS, NRP, and CPR as a group. This month allows the residents to spend a lot of time together and develop lasting friendships.

6.  Moonlighting opportunities
Deaconess Hospital offers several moonlighting opportunities within the system. Residents are able to moonlight with the Hospitalists during their PGY2. Residents are able to moonlight with Pulmonary Critical Care after completing their ICU rotation during PGY2. Residents can moonlight in the Emergency Department after obtaining their Indiana Medical License.

7.  Residents run their own in-patient medicine service
The residents run their own inpatient medicine service, which consists of residency patients and patients from the Family Medicine Faculty Clinic. Residents are able to keep continuity of care by caring for the residency patients while they are hospitalized. Residents also work with Deaconess Hospitalists to admit and care for other patients.

8.  Night float with no in-house call
The residents have a night float system during PGY2 and take no in-house call. The residents do have a “call room” that the night float person can use to get some sleep. The call room was recently remodeled. It has a small kitchen, a bathroom, queen sized bed, and two computers. During the day, it doubles as an in-hospital office for the residents.

9.  Hospitalist Fellowship available
Deaconess Hospital offers a hospitalist fellowship for family medicine residents that would like to become hospitalists. This fellowship is a great opportunity to work with the hospitalists and gain valuable experience working with inpatient medicine.

10.  Epic EMR
Deaconess Health Systems uses the EPIC EMR. Residents are able to access the EMR from their iPads and from home as well as from any computer in the hospitals or clinic. EPIC allows users to create templates and smart phrases that assist with notes. Many of the prescriptions are done electronically. Residents can also use Dragon to dictate notes.
