Dr. Porter received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and his medical degree from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. He is board certified in internal medicine and in pediatrics.
Dr. Porter joined Deaconess Hospital in 2000 as a hospitalist and was appointed Vice President of Medical Affairs in 2002.  He became Vice President of Quality & Innovation and Chief Medical Officer for Deaconess Health System in 2006. As a member of the executive team, Dr. Porter oversees a 600-physician medical staff, quality improvement, information services, risk management, the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency program and a number of clinical service lines and other functions.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Healthcare Executives.  He is also a member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Physician Executives, American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association, and Vanderburgh County Medical Society.
Dr. Porter is actively involved in his community including serving as chair of the Patient Safety Coalition of Southwest Indiana & Kentucky, vice-chair of the board of directors of the United Way of Southwest Indiana and raising funds on behalf of the YMCA, American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. He also serves on the Gilda's Club Clinical Advisory Council and is a USA Swimming Official.
