Facing Chronic Illness

Lord, I am saddened that my illness denies me complete control of my life. I am unhappy that it has snatched away total freedom to fashion the pattern of my days. I am angry that it renders me dependent and puts me at the mercy of others. Guard me against complaining too much about this loss of independence, Lord, and keep me from pining for life as it used to be. Let me be accepting of all that makes my heart heavy, all that dampens my spirit. Let me count my blessings, not my trials. Let me measure my happiness, not my adversity.

In Thanksgiving

Gracious God, thank you for the blessings of my life, especially for your constant care for me. May I always remember that you are by my side every moment of the day. Amen.

Lord, what will this day hold for me? Some say it is better not to know what lies ahead. We don't worry about it then. Your grace is sufficient for us. It gives us an opportunity to put our hand in Yours, to walk through life with faith, trusting You. Help me to walk with You in faith today. Amen. - Father Joseph J. Sullivan

A Course in Miracles

As you close your eyes, sink into stillness. Let these periods of rest and respite reassure your mind that all its frantic fantasies were but the dreams of fever that has passed away. Let it be still and thankfully accept its healing. No more fearful dreams will come, now that you rest in God.

Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen. - Reinhold Niebuhr

Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me into the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Resources for Reflection

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy. - Kahlil Gibran

May suffering ones be suffering free and the fear struck fearless be. May the grieving shed all grief and the sick find health relief. - Zen Chant

I thank God for my handicaps, for, through them, I have found myself, my work, and my God - Helen Keller

And I saw the river over which every soul must pass to reach the kingdom of heaven and the name of that  river was suffering - and I saw the boat which carries souls across the river and the name of the boat was love. - Saint John of the Cross

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore.  - Psalm 121

It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High. To declare Your loving kindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night. - Psalm 92:1-2

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. - Psalm 96:1-2

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God. It is He who has made us and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise, be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations. - Psalm 100

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. - Psalm 25:1-2
