Pediatric Unit & Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

PICU

“Emergency” and “child” are two words you never want in the same sentence. Deaconess is here when those unwanted emergencies occur. At Deaconess Gateway Hospital, we offer Riley’s world-renowned pediatric expertise. Together with Riley Hospital for Children IU Health, we have designed a leading-edge pediatric inpatient unit and pediatric intensive care unit.

Our Pediatric Unit and Intensive Care Team is composed of a variety of professionals available to meet your family’s needs with skill and compassion. Your specialized team may include a Pediatric Intensivist, Pediatric Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Social Worker, Dietitian and Child Life Services.  Each Pediatric Nurse is Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified, and a large percentage of the our nurses are Certified Pediatric Nurses (CPN). Each staff person is ready to provide expert nursing care for your child

Our Pediatric Unit includes:
•    All private rooms for privacy and peaceful healing
•    Playville
•    Family lounge
•    Child-friendly menu

This 17-bed specialty unit provides regular pediatric and intensive care for patients from infancy to seventeen years old.  Rooms provide ample space for patient care, equipment, and visitors.  The unit provides specialized equipment in a range of sizes and has been designed to promote patient comfort.  The smaller size promotes teamwork and communication between coworkers and creates a positive, collaborative work environment.  This unit is staffed by PALS-certified nurses, many of whom are certified in pediatrics.  The staff works closely with hospitalists, pediatricians, intensivists, respiratory therapy, and surgeons to ensure the best care possible.

Our patient population consists of a wide range of acute illnesses such as respiratory, dehydration, hyperbilirubinemia, and surgical.  Our staff care for patients requiring outpatient medication infusions and blood transfusions.  In addition to outpatient infusions, MRIs, CT scans, and VCUGs with sedation are also cared for on this unit.  Pediatric patients are admitted to this unit from throughout the tristate area.

The pediatric unit at Deaconess Gateway provides family centered care, recognizing that the family is the constant in a child’s life.  Each patient room features a television and DVD console, with movies available at the nurse’s station.   A playroom is available for patients without contagious conditions. A Nintendo Wii, X-box, and Play Station are set up on wheels, so they can be moved between patient rooms.   Access to an IPAD is also available. On-site Child Life services include procedure preparation and distraction, comfort positioning, therapeutic play, and pet therapy.
