Deaconess Riley

Child Life Services

Child Life Services at Deaconess Hospital is here to help children and their families cope when medical
services are needed. We do this through a variety of ways at our multiple locations including in-patient care, out-patient services, and the emergency department.
We embrace the value of family and play in the healing process as we work to ensure optimal growth and development. In coordinating child life services we look at the needs of the patient and family, and we collaborate with all involved while helping to support the family and give our patients a normal developmental play experience even though they are hospitalized.
Our services mirror services provided at Riley Hospital for Children and we collaborate with their Child Life Department on a regular basis to stay on the leading edge of care.

Partnering with Parents

When it comes to knowing your child, the parent is the expert. We partner with parents by providing:
  • Art projects
  • Reading materials
  • Music
  • Support of patient interaction in Playville (indoor play facility)
  • Support of parents through conversation, diversion, or a needed break from the room
  • Play opportunities specific to each child's interests and particular situation
