Linda E. White Announces Retirement Plans

Yesterday, the Board of Deaconess Health System approved retirement plans for Linda E. White, President and CEO, Deaconess Health System. After 15 years in this role, White will step down effective June 30, 2017. She will continue to serve at Deaconess post-retirement as CEO Emerita for a one-year term.   
At yesterday’s meeting, the Board of Directors also selected Shawn McCoy, current Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, to succeed Linda as Deaconess Health System’s next CEO. Dr. James Porter, current Executive Vice President of the Physician Enterprise will become Deaconess Health System President. These appointments are effective July 1, 2017.
In announcing Linda White’s retirement, Chairman of the Board Jerry Benkert noted that she has been associated with Deaconess for the majority of her professional career. “With Linda’s leadership, Deaconess has realized unprecedented growth while maintaining the commitment to patient-centered, compassionate healthcare. We are proud of the positive impact Linda and Deaconess have had on this community over the years,” he said.

Linda E. White
Linda’s history with Deaconess began with her enrollment in the Deaconess School of Nursing. Over the next 40 years, her job titles included Nurse Analyst, Director of Medical/Surgical Nursing, Vice President of Nursing, Vice President of Patient Care, Chief Operating Officer, President of Deaconess Hospital (2002), and President and CEO of Deaconess Health System (2004 to present).
Today, the health system includes six acute care hospitals - Deaconess Hospital, Deaconess Gateway, The Heart Hospital, The Women’s Hospital, Deaconess Cross Pointe and HealthSouth Deaconess - in addition to our multi-specialty Deaconess Clinic. In the past ten years alone, the Deaconess Gateway campus has grown from the original hospital in 2006. A second patient tower was added in 2010, and currently, construction of a third patient tower to house The Orthopedic and Neuroscience Hospital is underway.
In addition to her great work within Deaconess, Linda has devoted her time and talent to numerous civic and community endeavors. She has served on a variety of non-profit boards of directors and was presented with the Athena Award in 2001 for her support and mentorship of women in business. Currently, Linda is a member of the University of Evansville, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Old National Bancorp Boards of Directors.

Shawn McCoy
An Evansville native, Shawn has served Deaconess for 25 years, beginning his tenure as an industrial engineering summer intern. He held many different and varied management roles throughout his career, moving to the Chief Operating Officer position in 2005. The Board unanimously selected him to succeed Linda White as the CEO of Deaconess Health System based on his intimate knowledge of the organization, his business acumen, ability to forge relationships with physicians, and his involvement in the community and non-profit organizations. 

Dr. James Porter
A native of southeastern Illinois, Dr. Porter has been with Deaconess for 16 years, beginning his career as a hospitalist. He has held various administrative roles during his tenure and became the Chief Medical Officer in 2006. He will serve as President of Deaconess Health System and be responsible for the physician enterprise which oversees quality of patient care, physician relationships, advancement of the electronic medical record, Deaconess’ accountable care organization and the infrastructure to support population health management.
Steve Titzer was elected as the new Chairman of the Deaconess Health System Board of Directors. He succeeds Jerry Benkert who completed his three-year term as Board Chair. Mr. Benkert was recognized for his leadership and service to the organization and given the honor of Board Member Emeritus.
In his closing remarks as Chairman of the Board, Benkert stated, “Deaconess is in excellent hands with the planned succession and promotion of McCoy and Porter and the continued guidance of Linda White. We are fortunate to have the Deaconess administrative team positioned for this transition.” He also shared with the Board that during the next eight months, Linda will work closely with McCoy to ensure a very successful and smooth transition for Deaconess.
