Congratulations to Dr. Jared Kocher, Assistant Director of the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency (DFMR) Program, and Dr. Tom Selby, Resident Physician at DFMR, for having their article on sore throats and the use of antibiotics published in the July 1, 2014 issue of the American Family Physician Journal.
Deaconess has been ranked as one of the best hospitals for 2014-15 in Indiana by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.
 
Deaconess ranked 8th in the state of Indiana and received an additional “Silver” status as a high ranking hospital for Southern Indiana. The specialties of Gynecology and Nephrology were recognized as high performing specialties.
The Indiana Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) presented Evansville-based Hafer Associates with the 2014 Outstanding Engineering Achievement award in recognition of the recent emergency power expansion project at Deaconess Hospital.

To appropriately serve patients, Deaconess must have reliable power and emergency power. In 2010, the hospital’s emergency power system was aging and had little redundancy and inadequate fuel storage. To help solve this complex and critical issue, Hafer Associates created an innovative engineering design that isolated and improved the emergency power system at Deaconess Hospital.
Deaconess was awarded full accreditation from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), an independent, accreditation organization recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The March of Dimes has awarded a grant to Deaconess Family Medicine Residency to support “centering pregnancy” in Vanderburgh County. Centering Pregnancy is a multifaceted model of care that gathers 8 to 12 women of similar gestational age to meet together on a regular basis to learn care skills, develop a support network, and receive education on maternal and infant topics.

Deaconess Hospital was once again named one of the top 150 greatest places to work in healthcare according to the May issue of Becker’s Hospital Review. Each year, Becker’s Hospital Review and Becker’s ASC Review develop their top 150 list through nominations and editorial research. The resulting list is a compilation of healthcare organizations that go above and beyond for their employees and are great places to work.
Designed to rate how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections, the latest Hospital Safety Score gave both Deaconess Hospital and Deaconess Gateway Hospital “A’s” – the top grade in patient safety.

Dr. Mell Welborn, Jr., M.D., received the Dr. Gordon T. Herrmann Distinguished Service Award from the IU School of Medicine.
The American Heart Association recognized Deaconess as a “Fit-Friendly Company” during a presentation this morning. Thanks to an organization-wide focus on improving the health of our employees, Deaconess qualified at the Platinum Level status as well as received credentials for Worksite Innovation.
Becker's Hospital Review named Chris Ryan, CEO of The Women's Hospital, one of the "50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know."
Up to 250 area diabetic and overweight Tri-State residents who have certain cardiac risk factors will have the opportunity to participate in two major long-term research studies.
The Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway was recognized by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for delivering quality and cost-efficient cardiac procedures.
Sam Rogers, Manager of Leadership Development at Deaconess, discussed how Deaconess is training managers in "soft leadership skills" to help minimize employee turnover. "If staff are going to turnover they're typically turning over because of supervisors," he said.

The Women's Hospital demonstrated its commitment to patient safety by being the first hospital in Indiana to deploy the V-360+ UV Room Sanitizer. Sonya Mauzey, Infection Preventionist at The Women's Hospital, said, "We are so excited to be able to add (this technology) to our current cleaning process."

Global research, technology, and consulting firm, The Advisory Board Company, recently highlighted Deaconess Health System's successful Population Health Management initiatives.


 
The Women’s Hospital has been ranked as the 2nd best place to work in health care from Modern Healthcare, a national health care industry news source. This is the fourth consecutive year for TWH to be on this list.

Evansville Cancer Center/Vantage Oncology (ECC/VO), a Tri-State Radiation Oncology Center (TROC), and Deaconess Chancellor Center for Oncology were recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain.
Modern Healthcare Magazine announced its Best Places To Work listing this week and The Women’s Hospital once again made the list. Modern Healthcare and The Studer Group co-sponsor this recognition program as a way to honor workplaces throughout the healthcare industry that empower employees to perform at their optimum level and provide patients and customers with the best possible care, products, and services.
For the second consecutive year, The Women’s Hospital received a Women’s Choice Award for “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience.”

Deaconess Clinic Mt. Pleasant is a brand new, state-of-the-art medical facility located at 8600 North Kentucky Avenue – Just off Hwy. 41N and Mt. Pleasant Rd. behind Bob’s Gym.
 
This clinic location replaces Deaconess Clinic North on Mill Road.
In the July issue of Hospital’s and Health Networks Magazine (H&HN), Deaconess Health System was the only regional hospital recognized as one of 2013’s “Most Wired.”

This recognition is the result of the magazine’s Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted between January 15 and March 15, 2013. The survey asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives.

Deaconess Hospital and Deaconess Gateway Hospital were certified as Level 1 Primary Care Stroke Centers by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), a nationally recognized accreditation organization with deeming authority from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It recognizes hospitals that encourage and promote breastfeeding and facilitate bonding between mother and baby. The designation requires implementation of the “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.”
Dr. Anthony Kaiser received a three-year appointment as Cancer Liaison Physician for the cancer program at Deaconess Hospital. Cancer Liaison Physicians are an integral part of cancer programs accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).

The Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway and the University of Southern Indiana partnered with the Indiana Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) in 2008, to conduct a three-year national initiative, Care Transitions, designed to reduce re-hospitalizations for their Medicare patients. The final result was a 14.74% reduction in 30-day re-hospitalizations in the targeted community.
