The State of Illinois Department of Public Health has designated Deaconess Hospital as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Deaconess Hospital has been designated by the State of Illinois as a Level II Trauma Center since 2003.
A Level II Trauma Center must meet strict state guidelines regarding the care of critically injured pediatric patients. To achieve this designation, Deaconess demonstrated its high trauma care standards. The designation acknowledges that the entire hospital and its medical staff have been engaged in establishing a process for improving patient care and responding to the needs of the Tri-State area. This process includes a well-coordinated trauma team, continuous quality improvement efforts, a medical review process, a trauma registry, and medical staff and administrative staff support.

Matthew Vassy, M.D., FACS, and Trauma Medical Director.“ With this designation from the State of Illinois, the hard work and dedication of our physicians, nurses and staff involved in trauma care have been recognized with top honors.”

Heather Marin, MS, LCGC, has joined The Women’s Hospital as an oncology genetic counselor. In this role, Marin reviews a person’s medical and family histories, explains the basics of cancer genetics and provides information about potential cancer risk. Marin is also knowledgeable about the status of testing for genes associated with hereditary cancers and whether genetic testing is an appropriate option for a family to consider.
Marin received her Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology in 2001 from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. She completed her Master of Science degree in medical and molecular genetics in 2003 from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana. Marin is board certified in genetic counseling and licensed by the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana.
Prior to joining The Women’s Hospital, Marin practiced at St. Vincent Women’s Hospital at the Center for Prenatal Diagnosis in Indianapolis.

The Indiana Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) presented Evansville-based Hafer Associates with the 2014 Outstanding Engineering Achievement award in recognition of the recent emergency power expansion project at Deaconess Hospital.
To appropriately serve patients, Deaconess must have reliable power and emergency power. In 2010, the hospital’s emergency power system was aging and had little redundancy and inadequate fuel storage. To help solve this complex and critical issue, Hafer Associates created an innovative engineering design that isolated and improved the emergency power system at Deaconess Hospital.

The Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway and the University of Southern Indiana partnered with the Indiana Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) in 2008, to conduct a three-year national initiative, Care Transitions, designed to reduce re-hospitalizations for their Medicare patients. The final result was a 14.74% reduction in 30-day re-hospitalizations in the targeted community.
